Pop-up Creative station: yay spring!

Celebrate spring with this free pop-up creative station held at Emily Carr's childhood home! On March 18th, join us as we create art celebrating the beauty of Spring in the lovely, historical room where Emily Carr taught art classes over 100 years ago. 

Fun for everyone. All ages and abilities are welcome. All materials provided.

The Zen of Emily carr

March 3-April 15 2023

Roberta Pyx Sutherland is a Canadian artist based in Victoria, British Columbia. From her first solo exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in the 1980’s her work has focused on the relationships of cosmic patterning, divine intelligence, the environment and the inter-connectivity of all life forms. This show will highlight the artist's work inspired by Emily Carr, and will be on display from March 3-April 15th during our regular opening hours.

Window wanderland 2023

Get ready for the 5th annual James Bay Window Wanderland!

Feb 24, 25, 26, 6-9pm all around James Bay

Everyone in James Bay is invited to decorate a window. You can make a display in the windows of your home, apartment, business, car or high rise. Taking part is FREE! This inclusive event brings out the artist in all of us

Please register your Window Wanderland project by February 20th at www.windowwanderland.com/event/james-bay-2023  so that we can put a map together for every one to use while they wander! To register, click the “Take part in this event” button.

Emily Carr Birthday Celebrations!

 Carr House is celebrating the 151st anniversary of Emily Carr's birth with a weekend of fun free events, plus a special open house on December 13th! 

On Dec 10-11 from 10am-3pm, works from local artists will be displayed throughout Carr House and will be available for purchase. We'll also be having a special creation station where you can learn to make custom decorated envelopes and even enter one in our contest!

On Dec 13th, Carr House will be open from 10am-3pm. Explore the childhood home of a Canadian icon and enjoy a treat as we celebrate Emily Carr.

Small Works Art Show

 Visit Carr House on December 10 and 11th for a chance to see the work of several local artists, tour the house where Emily was born, and take part in a creation station where you can decorate envelopes for your holiday or birthday cards!

Close-up at Carr house will feature the Four Suits of Magic, doing four different magic acts, in four rooms of the Emily Carr house. Spectators will move through the house, enjoying its character and charm while having their minds blown by some of the most impressive close-up magic Victoria has to offer.

Come see Dave Morris, Justin Louie, Colin Holt, and Derek Johnston – the Four Suits of Magic!

Audience are encouraged to dress for the occasion. The Four Suits will wear their best, you should too!

The event will run for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and includes an intermission with complimentary coffee and tea provided by the Emily Carr House.

Howl-oween Pet Parade

October 29 2022

Check-in for contestants begins at 12:15pm

Parade begins at 1pm

It's the most spooktacular time of the year and Carr House is celebrating with a pet parade. The second annual Carr House Howl-oween pet parade will be held on October 29th, rain or shine in the gardens of 207 Government Street.  Even if you don't have a pet to parade, dress up and cheer for the best costumes in five categories:  

  • Best Owner/Pet Costume Combo
  • Best Emily Carr-related Costume
  • Best Scary Costume
  • Best Homemade Costume
  • Best Virtual Costume (Virtual costume entrants: please submit photos by October 30)

Registrations are limited so please make sure to sign up your costumed pet for this family-friendly FREE event! Thanks to James Bay Vet Clinic for their generous sponsorship and prizes!

Meet the author

September 30

 Join us on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to hear the latest work of author Katłįà (Catherine) Lafferty, a northern Dene/Cree/Metis novelist from the Northwest Territories. This event will start at 5pm on Sept 30, and will feature a reading from Katłįà's latest book. This book will be available for purchase at the event. Light refreshments will be served.  

JAMES BAY ART WALK

September 24 & 25

The James Bay Art Walk is a free community event organized by a group of artists and art lovers to showcase emerging and established artists who live and work in James Bay.
On Saturday September 24 and Sunday September 25, 2022, art lovers from near and far, neighbors and visitors, are invited to wander through our beautiful neighbourhood visiting studios and meeting the artists who help make James Bay a vibrant community.

Emily Carr's Cartoons

We're wrapping up our free summer lecture series with a talk on Emily Carr's cartoons! Learn about Emily's cartoon books, her political cartoons, and more! This lecture will start at noon in the Carr House gardens. Limited seating is available, and visitors are welcome to bring their own seating or blankets. After the lecture, Carr House will be open to visitors until 3pm. No need to register, just come on by on August 23rd, 12pm! 

Emily and Alice in Alaska

Our free summer lecture series continues, as we follow Emily and Alice Carr on their 1907 cruise to Alaska! This lecture will start at noon in the Carr House gardens. Limited seating is available, and visitors are welcome to bring their own seating or blankets. After the lecture, Carr House will be open to visitors until 3pm. EMILY CARR IN FRANCE

August 9

Learn about Emily Carr's trip to France in 1910, the artists she met, and how it affected her artwork. Follow Emily and her sister Alice on their trip across Canada and across the Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by Emily's own cartoon drawings. This talk will begin at noon in the gardens of Carr House, and afterwards the house will be open for visitors. Emily Carr:Environmentalist

Join us for a free noontime lecture exploring Emily Carr's love of nature and her legacy as an early environmentalist. This talk will begin at noon in the gardens of Carr House, and afterwards the house will be open for visitors. Summer lecture series

Join us at Carr House this summer for a series of talks exploring Emily Carr's life, legacy, and values. Talks will start at noon, with a chance to explore the house and gardens afterwards.
